About Us
In September 1936, there was a call for the public to meet in the assembly
room of the Howard County Court House. Out of that meeting came a petition that was
to be circulated around the County. The petition needed 15% of qualified electors to
create a Rural Public Power District.
Plans were formulated, and it was decided that a sub-organization be made up in
each precinct for the purpose of electing a director. The director would be a
representative of their district, in order that a public corporation could be formed.
In October 1936, the Rural Electrification Administration approved $400,000 for a Rural Public Power District as a result of the signatures of 1,135 persons interested in obtaining electricity on their farms.
Bids were taken for 394 miles of line, and that would service approximately 600
customers. The bids were received and then opened on July 1937. The Charles Robeck
Construction Company was the lowest bid at $335,466.75. The work was to be completed
by April 1938.
